We are seeking an exceptional candidate for the role of European College of Zoological Medicine (Zoo Health Management) Resident Veterinary Surgeon who will assist in the delivery a full range of the veterinary services across RZSS.

The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) are seeking a candidate for the role of European College of Zoological Medicine (Zoo Health Management) Resident Veterinary Surgeon to provide Veterinary Surgeon services across RZSS, contributing to maintaining a high standard of medical care and where appropriate oversee the work of other colleagues.  This is an exciting opportunity to further your career with one of Scotland’s leading conservation and education charities where you will be trained over 3-year fixed term period in preparation for examination by the European College of Zoological Medicine (Zoo Health Management).

What you’ll be doing…

The RZSS veterinary services are provided by a team of veterinary professionals working within the RZSS Living Collections Department. While the team is based at RZSS Edinburgh Zoo, they also oversee the clinical veterinary needs of the RZSS Highland Wildlife Park and contribute significantly to numerous projects led by RZSS Conservation. Reporting to the Head of Veterinary Services, the successful candidate will be responsible, under direction from the Head of Veterinary Services and/or Head of Living Collections, for overseeing the health and welfare of all animals kept by the RZSS at their two sites, Edinburgh Zoo and the Highland Wildlife Park. This will include preventative health measures and planning, relevant disease testing, quarantine assessment of new animals, suitable treatment of any ill or injured animals, as well as post-mortem examination of deceased animals when this is judged to be of importance to other animals in the collection or as directed by the Head of Veterinary Services.

What you’ll need…

The ideal candidate will hold a veterinary degree and be a current (or eligible) Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. They should also preferably hold a post graduate veterinary qualification in zoological medicine and have demonstrated experience with zoological collections.  In addition, they must be 2 years qualified as a veterinary surgeon and be eligible to practice in the UK.  Up to date knowledge of current veterinary techniques and best practice is essential as is the ability to work as part of a team to build effective relationships with colleagues.  This role would suit an enthusiastic individual who can demonstrate a quality approach to work.
